As we welcome visitors from around the globe to Charlottesville, we enjoy shining the light on some of our favorite area attractions. Here are a few of our "off-the-radar" picks for local breweries. We hope you enjoy and please contact us if we can provide additional info or help plan your next C’ville visit. |
While it is a known piece of Virginia history that Thomas Jefferson himself grew hops at Monticello, he could have never dreamed of his beloved Charlottesville becoming a mecca for the craft some centuries later. In fact, there are more than 15 breweries located in the vicinity, and 7 within the city limits.
Reason Beer - Just a stone's throw from North Grounds is the newest on the scene, Reason Beer. Launched in 2017, Reason was conceptualized by two friends who grew up together in Charlottesville, moved away, yet always stayed in touch due to a love of beer. Named by Beer Advocate as one of the best new breweries of 2017, Reason bills their brews as "creatively balanced."
Three Notch'd Brewing Co. - Amazing beers and the largest restaurant in Charlottesville. Located at IX Art Park.
South Street Brewery - Located on Water Street, just off the Downtown Mall, South Street Brewery has been open since 1998. It was purchased, reimagined, and reopened by Mandy and Taylor Smack, owners of the wildly successful Afton-based Blue Mountain Brewery. To the delight of us locals, the Smacks kept $2 Tuesdays, and the wood burning fireplace in tact.
Our last piece of advice. Here's how you navigate Charlottesville's breweries like a local, working your way from 29 North to Downtown Charlottesville:
Reason Beer - Random Row - Hardywood - South Street - Champion - Three Notch'd Craft Kitchen and Brewery.
Crozet and 151 (Afton/Nelson):
Pro Re Nata - Starr Hill - Blue Mountain - Wild Wolf - Devil's Backbone
