Dive into history during your next trip to Charlottesville.Monticello
Home to Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and Father of the University of Virginia, Monticello is located in Charlottesville, just 15 minutes from Inn at Darden. In addition to tours of the house and grounds, Monticello offers a variety of special events year-round including archaeology, apple tasting, fermentation, gardening, slavery tours, hikes, and more. Bring the kids! Monticello has plenty of family-friendly programming as well.
Montpelier
Home to James Madison, the fourth President of the United States and architect of the Constitution, Montpelier is located in Orange County, about 35 minutes away. There are a variety of house tours, 8+ miles of public walking trails (free!), and exhibitions (included with price of admission). Montpelier is also home to the Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution, which offers year-round professional education both on-site and online.
Highland
Home to 5th President James Monroe, Highland is located close to Monticello in Charlottesville. Featuring traditional home tours, specialty tours, and augmented reality tours, Highland's website suggests 90 minutes for the full experience (and longer should you wish to explore the grounds). This is about half the time suggested by Monticello - so visiting both homes in the same day is absolutely doable. Looking to learn more now? Check out Highland's current web exhibit.
